Abstract

Acoustic surveys represent the primary method for monitoring bat populations and assessing their habitat use, yet reference recordings and associated metadata remain fragmented across repositories, recording programs, and private collections. We present ChirosetEurope, a curated dataset of European bat vocalizations (echolocation and social calls) assembled from multiple open repositories and expert-curated collections. The dataset integrates recordings from diverse geographic regions, habitat types, recording devices, and species groups, together with harmonized taxonomic labels, standardized metadata, and group-aware train/validation/test partitions optimized for machine-learning applications. To respect the licensing terms under which recordings were originally published, it is distributed as a metadata resource providing provenance information and persistent links to the original recordings, rather than redistributing all audio files. ChirosetEurope is designed to support a broad range of applications, including bioacoustic research, biodiversity monitoring, species identification, ecological analyses, and machine-learning development. By consolidating previously dispersed resources into a unified and versioned framework, the dataset provides a community resource for research on European bat bioacoustics and automated acoustic analysis.

Data and Code Availability Statement:
All data have been deposited in the following Zenodo repository: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20773227. The accompanying Zenodo release (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20773227) contains a starter Jupyter notebook (ChirosetEurope starter.ipynb) intended for dataset users. This notebook demonstrates how to query the metadata manifest, retrieve recordings from their original repositories or archive locations, and apply standard preprocessing steps for downstream bioacoustic and machine-learning applications. The custom code used to compile, curate, and validate the ChirosetEurope metadata registry is available through GitHub at https://github.com/anlebai/ChirosetEurope and archived as a versioned release on Zenodo at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.21992417. The code is provided as a Jupyter notebook (Creating ChirosetEurope.ipynb) which also includes optional analysis routines for exploratory dataset inspection, such as summary statistics and visualisations of class imbalance, and supports reproduction of the figures and tables presented in this manuscript. All code is released under the MIT License.
