Modern dolphin training as a behavioral process: Learning, motivation, social interaction, and cooperative husbandry

Abstract
Dolphin training is widely used in zoological facilities for public presentations, husbandry, research, veterinary care, and daily management, yet many practical principles remain incompletely formalized in the scientific literature.
This narrative, practice-based review integrates professional training knowledge with learning theory, cetacean cognition, applied animal behavior, veterinary care, and welfare science. It examines reinforcement-based learning, shaping, cue control, reinforcement schedules, behavioral sequencing, motivation, social and observational processes, exploratory interaction, and voluntary participation.
Cooperative husbandry is considered an application of these shared principles that can enable dolphins to participate in medical, reproductive, health-monitoring, rehabilitation, and management procedures with reduced reliance on restraint.
By distinguishing published evidence from illustrative professional examples, the review presents modern dolphin training as a stepwise, individualized, and bidirectional behavioral process rather than simply the production of trained responses.
This framework may support future research and practice in dolphin welfare assessment, comparative cognition, veterinary care, physiological monitoring, and applied animal behavior.
